Edson FMA Owl Monitoring Program Report.

This monitoring program was initiated to determine whether species diversity has been maintained over time. Conserving species diversity was identified as a Critical Element within Weyerhaeuser’s Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP). An SFMP is one of the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Sustainable Forest Management System. 2009 was the fourth season that owl monitoring occurred in the study area.

A Little Brown Bat hibernaculum survey was conducted in Wapiabi Cave, near Nordegg, Alberta during the winter of 2008. Results of this survey was reported and current bat conservation concerns were discussed including white-nose syndrome, a fungal pathogen first detected in bat populations near New York in 2006.

Results of five years of autumn Northern Saw-whet Owl monitoring were summarized. Capture rates, seasonal distribution in capture abundance, sex ratios of owls and mark-recapture data were reported.
